Researchers in the US have reported a laboratory method that uses ambient moisture to break down PET plastics, drawing interest from analysts assessing new routes for circular materials. The technique, which relies on a low-cost catalyst rather than heat or aggressive chemicals, is being positioned as a potential option for lower-energy recycling if it can be scaled and tested on complex waste streams.

Early trials indicate recovery rates of about 94 per cent within hours, suggesting that the process can separate PET at the molecular level and return material with near-virgin quality. The work remains at a research stage, but its apparent simplicity has prompted cautious attention across the sector.

Industry analysts say the approach is notable for combining basic operating conditions with potential scalability, though they warn that commercial prospects are unclear. There are no public signs that large plastics producers or recyclers are evaluating the method, and its economic viability has not been assessed.

Researchers also acknowledge technical barriers. Real-world PET waste often includes additives, dyes, multilayer structures, labels and food residues that can limit recycling performance. The team has yet to demonstrate how the process manages such contaminants, which typically determine whether laboratory breakthroughs can function at industrial scale.

The study comes as companies and policymakers look for technologies that can improve recycling yields without raising costs or energy use. If further testing shows that the moisture-driven method can operate across varied feedstocks outside controlled settings, it could expand the set of tools available for next-generation plastics recovery.

For now, the development remains an early scientific advance whose role will depend on future validation and its ability to withstand the conditions of commercial waste streams.
