Aduro Clean Technologies moves toward industrial scale in the Netherlands, proving that the future of plastic is circular and profitable
16 Apr 2026

Aduro Clean Technologies has awarded a permitting contract to Ebert HERA Esser Holding to oversee the regulatory process for its first industrial recycling facility in the Netherlands. Located at the Chemelot Industrial Park, the plant marks the Canadian company’s transition from pilot-stage testing to commercial-scale operations within the European Union.
The facility will deploy Aduro’s proprietary Hydrochemolytic technology, a chemical process that uses water to break down polymer chains in plastic waste. By operating at lower temperatures than traditional pyrolysis, the method aims to reduce energy consumption while converting difficult-to-recycle plastics into high-value chemical feedstocks.
The development comes as chemical companies face increasing pressure from European Union regulators to integrate circular economy solutions. New packaging directives are expected to mandate higher levels of recycled content in consumer goods, driving demand for high-quality recycled naphtha. To align with these standards, Aduro recently joined Chemical Recycling Europe, an industry body focused on harmonizing recycling definitions and policy across the continent.
Market confidence in the project is supported by a preliminary offtake agreement, which secures a buyer for the plant’s initial output. The facility is designed for an initial processing capacity of 10,000 tonnes per year, intended to demonstrate the technical and economic viability of the process before further expansion.
While the contract with Ebert HERA formalizes the regulatory phase, the project remains subject to local environmental approvals and final investment decisions. Success at the Chemelot site will depend on the technology's ability to produce feedstocks that meet the purity requirements of existing chemical supply chains at a competitive price point.
