Plastic recycling is entering a period of renewed growth as tighter regulation and corporate demand reshape global materials markets, with the US emerging as a key driver.

Extended producer responsibility (EPR) laws are expanding across several US states, requiring companies to manage the waste linked to their packaging. The policies are creating more predictable demand for recycled materials, particularly in packaging and consumer goods.

Industry estimates suggest the global plastics recycling market could exceed $100bn by the end of the decade, supported by stricter compliance requirements and steady demand growth. Recent policy developments indicate a gradual alignment of state-level frameworks, improving visibility for recyclers and investors.

Companies are increasing spending on recycling infrastructure and advanced sorting systems to raise recovery rates and produce higher-quality recycled polymers. At the same time, large consumer brands are setting targets to increase recycled content in their products, reinforcing demand across supply chains.

Yet structural challenges remain. Recycled plastics often struggle to compete with virgin materials on price, especially when oil prices are low. Contamination in waste streams and fragmented collection systems continue to limit the scale and efficiency of recycling operations.

These constraints have raised concerns about whether supply can expand quickly enough to meet policy-driven and corporate demand.

Despite this, the direction of travel is clear. Regulatory pressure and voluntary commitments are converging to make recycling a more central part of the plastics industry. As EPR frameworks mature and investment in infrastructure continues, the sector is expected to play a larger role in efforts to reduce waste and support a circular economy.
