Recycled polypropylene may be edging closer to everyday food packaging. PureCycle and TOPPAN announced a partnership on February 18, 2026 focused on developing flexible films and thermoformed packs that incorporate purified recycled material. As an early example, the companies say they have already produced a snack bar wrapper containing more than 30% recycled content.

That single wrapper signals a broader ambition. Food packaging has long been one of the hardest destinations for recycled plastics because the materials must meet strict standards for performance, appearance, and safety. Even small variations in color or purity can derail commercial use, especially in flexible films that must run smoothly on high speed packaging lines.

The partnership pairs two different strengths. PureCycle is promoting its purification technology as a way to convert used polypropylene into material suitable for demanding applications, while TOPPAN contributes expertise in designing and manufacturing packaging formats such as films and thermoformed containers. Together, the companies aim to translate recycled resin into products that brands can actually deploy at scale.

Early targets include snack cups and microwaveable containers. These are common consumer formats where brand owners are under pressure to increase recycled content but cannot compromise durability or shelf life. For converters and packaging buyers, the collaboration hints at a potential pathway toward more circular packaging options.

Still, the move comes with caveats. The announcement centers on an initial product example rather than large scale production, and PureCycle’s regulatory filings highlight risks tied to plant performance, financing, and compliance hurdles. Even so, the collaboration suggests recycled polypropylene is beginning to move into one of packaging’s most technically demanding arenas.
